HOW TO APPLY FOR A - P A Y G - DEBIT CARD ONLINE
In this day and age of online fraud, online scams and weak online security in general there are only two real options for you to safely shop online. The first choice is to Not Shop Online at all - A good option if it wasn't for the fact that more high street shops are forcing us to do our shopping online, for whatever reason(s) - and the second option is to Use A Debit Card. However. Many people are still scared and worried that the Bank Account associated with their current debit card may be compromised in some way. So what is the solution? I don't now what thee solution is but one ideal solution is to get yourself a P.A.Y.G (Pay As You Go) Debit Card.....from Virgin Money.
Virgin offer a P.A.Y.G Debit Card, which costs £9.95 (one-off fee), that you simply top-up with cash at the post office (with no top-up charge) or newsagent (small top-up
charge). So if you top-up your Virgin Money Debit Card with £20 at the post office you only pay the post office teller/staff £20. If you top-up at a newsagent though you
will also pay £20 only, but a small administration fee (top-up charge) will be taken from the debit card's remaining balance of £20 for example.
Virgin Money are one of the few companies who don't charge a monthly fee for using or not using their debit card - Other companies charge £4 or more per month even if you don't use their debit card. Saying this. Virgin Money does offer a pay monthly p.a.y.g debit card, of £4.75 per month, whereby it works out cheaper, commission-wise, to pay a monthly fee if you do a lot of shopping. This is because there is no transaction fee. Otherwise you can stick to the standard p.a.y.g debit card whereby the transaction fee is 2.95%. Details are correct at the time of writing (14th April 2013).
The virgin money debit card is ideal for a wide range of purchases, both offline and online, and it is NOT associated with any bank account you may have. Your bank details are NOT required. This means you can limit the amount of money on your virgin money debit card and therefore limit the fraudsters to a small amount, or no amount, of money even if they were to scam you in some way. And that is what a virgin money, p.a.y.g, debit card is ideal for - When you need to pay for something online simply top-up your virgin money debit card the same day or day before; Otherwise, keep it empty.
To apply for a Virgin Money Debit Card begin by visiting to the Virgin Money web page - Type http://uk.virginmoney.com/virgin/prepaid-card/ into Safari's Address Bar edit box and then press the ENTER keyboard key to visit that web page. Once the web page has loaded (displayed) click on the APPLY ONLINE button to continue.
Clicking on the APPLY ONLINE button (above) then gives you the choice of applying for a P.A.Y.G (Pay As You Go) or PAY MONTHLY Prepaid Debit Card. However. Before you make your decision of clicking on the APPLY FOR 'PAY AS YOU GO' button for example, you must first make sure the setting called PLEASE TICK THIS BOX TO CONFIRM YOU ARE A UK RESIDENT AGED 18 OR OVER is ticked; otherwise the web page will complain when you click on the APPLY FOR 'PAY AS YOU GO' button.
Clicking on the APPLY FOR 'PAY AS YOU GO' button (above) opens up a separate window that displays the PAY AS YOU GO Online Application Form (below). The first part of that application form asks you questions about yourself, such as Name, Date Of Birth and Employment. Simply fill out the application to proceed.
The second part of the application form asks questions about your Home Address and how long you have lived there, as well as wanting to know your E-mail Address and contact Phone Numbers. When you enter your Postcode into the POSTCODE edit box it is important to realize that you must then click on the FIND ADDRESS button in order to select your house number and street name. Although you can enter your home address details manually, by clicking on the ENTER YOUR ADDRESS MANUALLY link, it is much better to click on the FIND ADDRESS button instead simply because the manual method does not always recognize a manually entered home address as a 'proper/real' home address, for whatever reason(s).
Once your home address details and so on have been entered (typed in/selected) correctly, the last part of the application form asks you to enter a Card Activation PIN Number (known as a Phone Access Code) that is used when activating your P.A.Y.G Prepaid Debit Card over the phone. This phone access code is personal to you, meaning you pick it yourself and type it into the two PHONE ACCESS CODE edit boxes before clicking on the NEXT button.
Clicking on the NEXT button (above) takes you to the second step of the application process, which is the YOUR CARD step (below). Notice the progress bar above the application, just below the Virgin logo/banner. It is informing you of the steps required in order to apply for the debit card. YOUR DETAILS - YOUR CARD - LEGALS - YOUR PAYMENT DETAILS - SUMMARY.
With step two - YOUR CARD - you simply need to click on the radio (circle/dot) button underneath your preferred colour of debit card before clicking on the NEXT button. And with step three - LEGALS - you need to put a tick next to the I HAVE READ..... and I ACKNOWLEDGE.... Terms & Conditions (Fig 1.6 below) before clicking on its NEXT button.
Read the Terms & Conditions (below) very carefully. Although terms and conditions tend to be boring and contain too much legal jargon, it does sometimes pay to look them over. If after reading them you agree to them, put a tick next to their settings called I HAVE READ..... and I ACKNOWLEDGE.... and then click on the NEXT button to continue with the application.
Step four - YOUR PAYMENT DETAILS - wants to know how you would like to pay for the debit card. You have the choice of paying for it with a Credit Card, Debit Card, SMS (Text Message) Voucher or PayPoint (Newsagent) E-Voucher. In this example I will be paying for it with a PayPoint E-Voucher, and more specifically with a EASE E-Money E-Voucher that you can buy from any newsagent that has a PayPoint (Top-Up) machine.
When paying for a prepaid debit card using an Ease E-Voucher you first select (click on) the PAY BY PAYPOINT E-VOUCHER radio (circle/dot) button and then type both the PIN Number and Serial Number into their respective edit boxes before clicking on the VALIDATE E-VOUCHER button. DO NOT click on the NEXT button. You must click on the VALIDATE E-VOUCHER button first so that the e-voucher's total credit (top-up amount) appears on the window, underneath the SERIAL NUMBER edit box. Once the e-voucher's PIN Number and Serial Number, and therefore total credit, have been validated you can then click on the NEXT button.
Clicking on the NEXT button (above) takes you to the last step - SUMMARY - whereby you need to review and confirm the details you have entered. You have the option to CHANGE those details, but only where you see a CHANGE button next to a certain section of detail (i.e. next to the Your Details section).
If you do not want to receive Junk Mail from Virgin and/or its, third-party, associates simply leave the KEEP IN TOUCH option unticked (clear). When you are ready, and 100% sure that all details are correct, click on the ORDER CARD button to continue.
If all went well you should see the THANK YOU page which tells you what will happen next - It basically tells you that you have now paid for the prepaid debit card, with your method of payment (i.e. with an e-voucher), and now need to supply two piece of information (identification) in order to verify that you are a citizen of Great Britain and more importantly that you live at the Home Address stated in the above application form. The two piece of information (identification) can be a photocopy of your Passport Page and Driving License or a photocopy of your Driving License and a Utility Bill for example.
Once you have gathered up your two pieces of identification you have to post them to the Virgin Money address stated on this page. As you will be sending personal identification papers in the post I would highly recommended you send them via Recorded Delivery or Special Delivery.
It normally takes 10 Working Days for your prepaid debit card to arrive, from the date-of-receipt of identification papers by Virgin, but has been known to take 7 Days in total. So at this point it's just a case of waiting for the prepaid debit card to arrive in the post. When it does there will be an Activation Hotline to call together with further instructions whereby your new prepaid debit card will then be activated and ready for immediate use.
Hopefully you can see the benefits of having a p.a.y.g debit card. It gives extra security when paying for things online. Virgin Money are not the only company doing this. There is also Sterling Card, Tuxedo and Prime amongst others. On top of this Compare Prepaid is a dedicated website that compares prepaid cards for you.
